WHAT THIS COURSE IS FOR
This course is the complementary class to USCCA Home Defense. It is designed to
introduce new and beginner shooters to handguns as defensive tools. It is suitable
for those new to handguns, or to experienced handgun owners who wish to develop
their handgun skills in a defensive direction. It covers semi-automatic pistols
and modern revolvers. It may be taken by accompanied children aged at least 16 years.
WHAT THIS COURSE CONTAINS
The course begins with a safety review, and a description of handgun actions and
functions. It continues with a brief review of defensive ammunition function and selection.
We next consider defensive shooting fundamentals, including defensive accuracy,
how to hold the firearm, how to present the firearm and key elements to build
consistent shooting, such as aiming and trigger control.
We continue with classroom practical exercises in firearm handling, including
loading, presentation, stance and aiming. Optimally, we work with your own handgun.
We introduce non-sighted aiming and demonstrate the utility of the SIRT pistol as
a training aid. We then move to the firing range where we focus on balancing speed
against precision at different distances.
We return to the classroom and review the range work, then explore various options
for skill development such as dry-firing and range drills. We discuss general legal
aspects of defensive handgun use. The class concludes with a question/answer session,
with suggestions for future development.
WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING
This is a beginner-level course, designed specifically for people who wish to use
their handgun defensively. It can be taken by adults and supervised older children
age 16 or over. You should bring note-taking material, and a light lunch. Most
importantly, you should bring a positive, safety-orientated attitude, and a
willingness to learn about handguns as defensive tools. We encourage you to bring
your own handguns, as well as 50 rounds of store-bought, factory-loaded, ammunition.
WHAT YOU WILL TAKE AWAY
We provide all training materials, the detailed USCCA "Basic Pistol Fundamentals"
manual, classroom and firing range facilities. Light refreshments are included.
You will take away a great experience, and a clear understanding of how to begin
shooting handguns from a defensive point of view. You'll understand how to begin
developing those skills, too. A USCCA certificate of completion is issued.
